The novel purports to explain why the gondoliers of Venice no longer sing, through the story of the protagonist Luigi. The Silent Gondoliers is the lesser-known (but equally wonderful) book written by S. Morgenstern, William Goldman's favorite pseudonym. It was released in hardcover in 1983, and a nicely-done trade paperback version came out from Del Rey in 2001. Paul Giovanopoulos pen-and-ink illustrations do indeed serve the story well.

Once upon a time, the gondoliers of Venice possessed the finest voices in all the world. But, alas, few remember those days--and fewer still were ever blessed to hear such glorious singing. No one since has discovered the secret behind the sudden silence of the golden-voiced gondoliers. No one, it seems, but S. Morgenstern.

The culmination of that is "The Silent Gondoliers," a very short book--only 110 pages, that bears absolutely no resemblence to "The Princess Bride." I am grateful for this.
